Kathryn Garcia

Body scape in blue | 2015

Kathryn Garcia showed a drawing in which we can observe how the body becomes landscape, becomes negative space, becomes octahedron, becomes pyramid. There are multiple ways of seeing one thing simultaneously. The body is depicted as headless to iterate the idea that when one is in deep meditation the limitations of a self dissolve, a body becomes environment, a sense of one-ness is experienced - there is no distinction. I am the Earth, the Earth is me, there is no “I”, there is no “me”. It is all a manifestation of what Bergson calls the Élan Vital - a vital essence that streams through this vessel we call the body, the “self”, and this experience we call life.

On the gallery's roof there was a second piece of the artist. A pyramid that has the intention to create something that, via it's size and materiality, confronts the viewer with the physicality of his/her own being and reflects his/her own image back onto itself.
